The most detailed observations we have from the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field show an estimated ~170 billion galaxies in the Universe. A recent calculation accounting for unobservable galaxies estimates 2 trillion. However, assuming ~100 small, satellite galaxies for every Milky Way-like galaxy suggests at least 6 trillion and perhaps 20 trillion.

We Could Be Just 10 Seconds Away From Discovering Dark Matter

Astrophysicists at UC Berkeley say the mystery of dark matter could be solved by confirming the existence of axions within the first 10 seconds of a supernova. They propose launching the GALactic AXion Instrument for Supernova (GALAXIS), a fleet of gamma-ray satellites to watch the sky at all times, instead of the current 1 in 10 odds with the Fermi Space Telescope and possibly 50 years between events.
