True Anomaly's flagship Jackal vehicle is designed for close-proximity operations to gather high-resolution imagery and reconnaissance.

Quantum computing company IonQ will acquire Capella Space, the first U.S. firm to launch a commercial synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging satellite. IonQ plans to build the world’s first space-based quantum key distribution (QKD) network for unhackable communications. Financial terms were undisclosed. The deal is expected to close before the end of 2025.

Silicon solar power specialist gets $21 million for mass production

New Mexico-based mPower Technology raised about $21 million in a Series B round led by Razor’s Edge Ventures, with participation from Shield Capital. The funds go towards mass-producing silicon-based solar power modules already used on six satellites in orbit. Hundreds of customers are under contract to launch with the company’s DragonSCALES interconnected photovoltaic cells in the next few years, including Airbus’s 200+ LEO satellites, Blue Origin and Firefly Aerospace.

French startup Dark is developing Interceptor, a spacecraft designed to launch from a modified commercial aircraft, intercept and capture space debris or potential threats, then de-orbit in the South Pacific Ocean. Investors include Eurazeo, Frst, and Long Journey Ventures, which previously backed SpaceX and Anduril and was founded by Arielle Zuckerberg, sister of Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg.

During a House Committee on Energy and Commerce hearing in April, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt spoke on the need for more renewable and non-renewable electricity to power data centers for AI computing needs, and later indicated plans to use Relativity Space to launch computing infrastructure into space. Data centers could be powered by solar panels and radiate heat into the vacuum of space.

The White House released a "skinny" budget proposal for fiscal year 2026 in which NASA would take a 25 percent funding cut, from about $25 billion to $18.8 billion. Among the program cuts include the Mars Sample Return mission, which the proposal says can be achieved by human missions to Mars. A more detailed fiscal plan is expected in the coming weeks.

FAA green-lights Starship launches every other week from Starbase

The FAA approved SpaceX for up to 25 Starship launches and landings within a calendar year, instead of 5, after determining that increasing Starship/Super Heavy launch cadence would not have significant negative impacts. SpaceX has not indicated the timing of Starship Flight 9, but maritime warnings over the Gulf of Mexico suggest the launch may happen as soon as May 21.

Astronomers Have Found a Prime Candidate for the Elusive Planet 9

Observations from two far-infrared, all-sky surveys have yielded a possible candidate for Planet 9, located around 400 AU (Astronomical Units) away compared to Neptune at about 31 AU. A theoretical Planet 9 has been hypothesized to explain some object clustering in the Kuiper Belt that extends from Neptune outward.
