Spanish launch services provider PLD Space added a €108 million second tranche to its Series C round, bringing the total to €288 million, with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation leading both tranches. The new capital will fund industrialization of its Miura 5 rocket, designed to deliver up to 540 kg to sun-synchronous orbit (SSO) including production expansion, test capacity, and launch infrastructure construction at the Guiana Space Centre. The funding extension follows an €158.9 million contract awarded by the European Space Agency (ESA) under its European Launcher Challenge, with the Miura 5 inaugural flight targeted before end of 2026.

Capital will be deployed toward expanding its next-generation Honeybee hyperspectral constellation into shortwave infrared (SWIR), synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and ultra-high-resolution (UHR) optical imaging, with the first Honeybee satellite targeted for 2027. The company has existing contracts with NASA and the NRO (National Reconnaissance Office), and was selected to lead India's first public-private Earth observation constellation of 12 satellites under IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center).

The mission, comprising an orbiter, lander, rover, and mini-hopper probe aboard a Long March 5 rocket, targets Shackleton Crater at the lunar south pole, a strategically critical site believed to hold water ice deposits essential for long-term lunar settlement. The delay intensifies the US-China lunar south pole race, potentially allowing Blue Origin's Blue Moon Mark 1 lander to land first if New Glenn returns to flight and Blue Moon launches in the first half of 2027 as targeted.
